I've fallen in love with KSL's online classifieds. They seem to be more popular in our area than either Craigslist or Freecycle. I've been keeping a frequent eye on the "free" section for jars or food to can.
Tonight I saw an ad for free elk meat. A hunter's wife didn't care for elk and was tired of it taking up space in her freezer. I saw it just in time, because she was splitting it between the first two responders and she got flooded with calls within 15 minutes.
After picking more free apples (drowning in apples over here, holy cow), we drove another 15 minutes south to pick up the frozen meat. We got 15 pounds of steak, roast, and ground meat. I was told it doesn't have freezer burn but is rather tough. No worries, I'll throw it in the slow cooker. I'm thinking it should make some good chili!

Wow, Cherish. I have never attempted any kind of game meat. You'll have to let us know how it goes. You're so smart about saving money on food.
My sister in law cans it in chunks with beef broth or boulion and then her kids will eat it.
And BTW, you are AWESOME! Will you adopt me?
I'm all for the adoption option!! :D you are amazing Cherish!
I can't believe what you'll do for free food!!
