Things I never thought I'd try

When I'm sick, I try to drink lots of water and herbal tea, and maybe some juice if I feel like splurging. Even when I alternate tea flavors, I get tired of all that liquid.

I tried some new tea when I was sick a few weeks ago, and the package said to try adding milk and sugar. Milk and tea has always seemed like a really weird combination to me. This tea is delightfully spicy, so I added molasses. Then I decided to add just a touch of milk. Oh my goodness! It was so yummy! It completely changed the flavor and broke up the monotony of consuming so much water.

Now I don't think I'd add milk to every herbal tea, but for a spicy one like this, it was fantastic.

Another thing I never thought I would try...organ meats. You know, like liver.

A little story. My mom hated liver and onions and vowed never to serve it to her kids. Because of this, I've never had liver. When she was pregnant with me, she was very poor and didn't even do prenatal visits- no money. A friend brought her a liver from a cow they'd slaughtered, because organ meats are good in pregnancy. (More info on that fact to come.) My mom knew she needed the nutrition from the liver, so she went to my grandma and asked how to prepare it. My mom ate liver for me. Man, I feel loved.

Anyway, back to the point. On one of my favorite blogs, I read about how organ meats are a super fertility food. If you're interested, read here, here, and here. I also learned that you can get them in capsule form and I'm seriously considering buying them.

A few weeks ago we were enjoying one of Nathan's free food birthday coupons, at a Brazilian grill. They came around offering chicken hearts and of course we both refused it immediately - eww. Then I remembered I wanted to try organ meats. The next time they offered, I got one. It was actually pretty decent - not gross at all.

So there you have it. My food choices have expanded. :-)

My mom really likes liver. I tried it once and only once.

Also, I never had hot tea really until I went to Kenya in college. They drink a lot of tea there, and always with milk and sugar. Now whenever I have tea with milk it reminds me of Kenya.

My grandpa was a butcher and so he would eat just about anything (even brain :P), but I have just never gotten into that. When I read Nourishing Traditions I actually considered that it might be a good thing. But that was the end of that thought proccess. You are super woman!

Never tried liver either. I had also never tried asparagus until last year because my mom never liked it either. Now I love it and get some whenever it's on sale. Who knows - maybe I'd like liver too?
